History of Ashford

1830

Ashford founded with an inn called The Squatters inn, built in 1849.

1851

Steel’s accommodation opened in Ashford, NSW.

1864

Growth of hotels, stores, police station, and the first school rooms.

1865

Carrol’s Hotel began trading, becoming a cornerstone of the village.

1870

Village population shifts, leaving Carrol’s inn as the primary licensed venue.

1872

The great flood, a test of community resilience and rebuilding.

1901

Commercial Hotel and the Public Hall established, defining the town center.

1919

Expansion era: Shire population reaches 2,100 with a thriving village.

1924

Gobbert family takes over, integrating retail and the village theater.

1933

Population peak of 3,800, cementing Ashford as a regional hub.

1936

Modernization: Second floor added and the introduction of cinema "Talkies".
